Beautiful Umbrian Country House with Heavenly Views for Holidays, Yoga Retreats | Casa en Citta di Castello

This stunning six-bedroom Umbrian farmhouse is a haven for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in nature in all its peaceful and unspoiled beauty. It is the perfect location for family holidays, getting away with friends, Yoga retreats (and other retreats), painting courses, walking/cycling holidays.
The 400sqm house has a magical hill-top setting, with unparalleled views over the wild oak-forests of Umbria's Apennine foothills. It is 25 minutes by car from Città di Castello, an authentic Umbrian walled town that is ideally located for exploring central Italy’s historic and cultural sites.
This spacious house was restored with great love and flair as our family home, where we lived for 11 years with our three children. It is on two floors, plus an attic bedroom. In the centre is a large, wooden-floored room that is perfect for Yoga practice or other group activities.
The charming restoration of the house - once a watch-tower with a history dating back several hundred years - retained as many of its quirky features as possible. So expect not just original terracotta floors and wooden beams, but wonky walls, oak ceilings, idiosyncratic doorways and a bedroom featuring wooden cow stalls.
House layout:
- On the ground floor, the large and lovely kitchen with its central oak table and copper worktops leads into the dining room and out onto the wisteria-covered terrace. In the other direction is the 50-square-metre Yoga space. The room comfortably takes 15 Yoga mats (see photos) and can take a couple more if the large bench is removed or mats are placed more closely. We provide sixteen mats and 20 blocks. On this floor, there are also three twin bedrooms and two bathrooms.
- Upstairs is the main living room, open to the rafters and with a huge fireplace. There are two double bedrooms (one also with a Chinese opium bed that can be used as an additional single bed) with ensuite bathrooms. A wrought-iron staircase leads up to the low-rise attic bedroom, with three single beds.
Garden:
The house is surrounded by a 2.5-acre fenced terraced garden and, beyond that, protected oak forests that extend down the long green valley. There are three terraces and many other shady or sunny spots to relax and enjoy the silence, the breath-taking views and, at night, the extraordinary canopy of stars (no light pollution here). The stone gazebo is a popular spot for gathering to enjoy home-made pizzas or barbeques.
Arrival and local contact:
We now live back in the UK, but Lia, our wonderful Italian friend and house manager, will meet you at the start of your stay to welcome you, give you the keys and show you around. Then the entire house and garden are yours to enjoy!

Hosting retreats:
If you are looking for a venue for your Yoga retreat - or for some other retreat, seminar or group activity - do get in touch. The house sleeps a maximum of 14 (including using the opium bed), but 12 if the two double beds are used as single beds.
Availability:
The house is available to rent from mid-May till the end of September each year. It is not available at other times of year.
Heating:
We only rent our house out during the warmer months, so, in the majority of cases, the last thing you will be wanting is heating! So we do not include the cost of any heating in our rental prices. In case of unseasonably cold weather at the beginning and end of the rental season, you are welcome to use any wood in our wood store to light any of the wood-burning stoves, with no extra charge. If you wish to turn the radiators on, this can be arranged, but we'll read the gas meter at the beginning and end of your stay and will charge you according to units used by making a deduction from your security deposit (so we will submit a claim for this to AirBnb after your departure).
Getting around:
- Access is by car only (there is no public transport to the house) - a beautiful 25-minute drive along a winding country road and, finally, a white road for the last 500m stretch to the house. Last winter's heavy snow took its toll on the roads, but they are easily passable in all cars (including rental cars).
- If you are planning to stay put once you get to the house, we can help you arrange a taxi to get to and from the town or airport.
- The closest airport to the house is Perugia International Airport, 50 minutes away (30 minutes from Città di Castello). There are regular flights to London Stansted on RyanAir, as well as domestic flights. Other possible airports are Ancona, Rome, Bologna and Pisa.
- Città di Castello - located near Umbria's border with both Tuscany and Le Marche - is a great base from which to explore central Italy's fabulous countryside, medieval hill-towns and historical and cultural sites. Possible day trips range from famous Rennaissance art centres to hidden gems, such as Florence, Siena, Bologna, Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, Todi, Ascoli Piceno, Urbino etc.
- Città di Castello has a wide network of connections by bus. The local train line is closed at the moment for an upgrade and is due to reopen in autumn 2018. The main train hub is Perugia (see Trenitalia). The car rental agency, Avis, has a local office.
